What is the challenge?
DEBRA Ireland is asking supporters to commit to doing 42 kilometres over the October Bank Holiday weekend 24 – 26 October. Each participant will commit to fundraising for us during this period to raise vital funds to support families living with EB (epidermolysis bullosa). DEBRA Ireland receive no guaranteed state funding and rely heavily on fundraising to support families.
When is the challenge happening?
Marathon in a Weekend takes place from 24 – 26 October 2020.
I just signed up, now what?
Firstly, join the Facebook Group we set up for this challenge. Click ‘Join Group’. Once you’re in, you can get your T-shirt, get tips, be inspired by others in the group also taking part and find out anything you want to know about the challenge!
What is the Facebook group for?
By joining the Facebook group, you are joining a group of like minded, enthusiastic people who want to take on the challenge but also raise vital awareness and funds for DEBRA Ireland. The group will support and encourage you to complete the challenge as well as answer any questions you may have. They are there for you!

Is there an entry fee?
There is no entry fee for this challenge. We do however ask you to fundraise as part of your challenge. Facebook Fundraisers are the easiest way to raise money. You can set one up in a few seconds here. And then it’s really easy to share the page with your Facebook friends.

What is a Facebook Fundraiser?
As well as hosting a traditional fundraiser, you can now hold a fundraiser on Facebook. It’s simple to set up and very easy for friends and family to donate to it without having to leave Facebook.

How do I set up a Facebook fundraiser?
It’s so simple! Visit https://www.facebook.com/fund/DEBRA.Ireland/ and wait for the pop-up to set up a page. Make sure you’ve selected DEBRA Ireland as your charity and don’t forget to add Marathon in a Weekend in your Fundraising page title so we can easily find and thank you!
Do I have to set up a Facebook Fundraiser?
Setting up a Facebook Fundraiser is the best and simplest way to get donations and share updates with your friends and family. All funds raised on Facebook get sent directly to DEBRA Ireland so less work for you! If you prefer, we can send you a sponsorship card. Just get in touch!
How do I edit the end date of my fundraising page?
Facebook Fundraising pages are automatically set to run for just 14 days!
You need to manually change the date to 30th October 2020.
Here’s how to do that:
- Go to your fundraising page
- Click “Edit” under the main image and headline
- Scroll down to the box that says “Set the End Date”
- Select DATE
- Then click Save in the top right.
My fundraiser ended before I finished the challenge. Can you re-start it?
Unfortunately not. Facebook Fundraisers are automatically set to run for just 14 days by Facebook! Unless you edit the end date, it will automatically end. Unfortunately, the only way around this is to set up a new fundraising page so make sure to edit your end date as above.
Can I raise money on another online platform like Just Giving?
Yes, if you would like. Facebook lodges the money directly with us and doesn’t charge you or us any fees but if you would like to set up a fundraising page on another online platform we recommend Just Giving. Just be sure and register with us to get a fundraising pack.
Can I get a sponsorship card?
Due to Covid-19, for the safety and wellbeing of you and those you may come into contact with, we are not including sponsorship cards in our packs, as these would be very hard to use while keeping safe social distancing. However, if you would like a sponsorship card, please do get in touch.
Where will my friends' money go?
When you fundraise on Facebook, their money comes directly to DEBRA Ireland. You don’t have to worry about this. It happens automatically.
How do I get my sponsorship money to DEBRA Ireland?
If you have set up a Facebook fundraiser then you don’t need to do anything. Your donations will automatically be sent to DEBRA Ireland.
If you have raised money via a sponsorship card then you can:
1. Donate raised funds online via our website https://debraireland.org/fundraising/donate/
2. Lodge the funds directly to our bank account. See details below:

I need help fundraising!
Don’t worry! Every donation you raise will make a difference. If you are fundraising using a Facebook fundraising page, please see our ‘tips for hosting a successful facebook fundraiser’ for information here. You will also get great tips in the Fundraising group so be sure to join!
My friend doesn’t have Facebook and wants to take part in the challenge?
That is no problem at all. Please get them to fill out the registration form here: https://givp.nl/erf/0852M8qa
We will send them a fundraising pack and T-Shirt and they can set up an online fundraiser on Just Giving:
Someone I know accidentally donated to my Facebook fundraiser. Can you issue them a refund?
Unfortunately we can’t issue refunds, Facebook must do this. People can request a refund themselves from Facebook by following the below steps:

- Select – I donated to a fundraiser on Facebook
- Select – I want a refund for my donation(s)
- Select – I made a donation by accident. Find their donation in the dropdown and request the refund.
How do I get my free T-shirt?
Once you register for the challenge, we will send out a t-shirt with your fundraising pack along with more information about the challenge and how to get started.
Where do I do the marathon?
Wherever you want! There is no set route. You can run or walk your marathon at home, around your neighbourhood, in a park…it’s up to you.
When do I start the marathon?
The October Bank Holiday weekend! So, you can do the marathon in one day or over the entire weekend. It’s up to you and your fitness level.
Do I have to do Marathon in a Weekend all at once?
No, the great thing about this challenge is that you can spread the 42 kilometres over the entire weekend or all in one day! If you need longer, that’s no problem, do it at a pace that suits you.
Do I have to run the full marathon?
It’s up to you! This is your marathon in a weekend. If you feel up to running it then go for it. Or if you would prefer to walk it – that’s fine! Just be sure to post your progress and updates on your Facebook Fundraising page so friends and family can cheer you on and we can see how you’re doing too!
Do I have to prove I have done the challenge?
Post videos, pictures and updates on your Facebook Fundraising page with your progress throughout the weekend so we can see you’ve completed the challenge. It is also a great way to show those who have sponsored you that you’re committed to completing the challenge.
When will I get my fundraising pack?
We will aim to get all fundraising packs out within 2-3 working days of receipt of your registration form but due to current Covid-19 restrictions, we ask you to please allow up to 5 working days to receive it. If you haven’t received it by then, please contact us and we’ll follow it up for you.

– A Cover Letter
My family want to do the challenge with me. Can you send me extra T-shirts?
The more the merrier! Please get them to each fill out the registration form to request extra t-shirts here
What if I don't raise much money?
We have no minimum or maximum amount that we would like our participants to raise. Please note that due to the cost of medals and postage, medals are for those who donate/fundraise.
How do I get my medal?
All those who fundraise or donate themselves will be given a medal on completion of their Marathon. Due to the cost of medals and postage, medals are for those who donate/fundraise.
What if I don't complete the challenge?
We fully understand you may not be able to complete your challenge for whatever reason. Please be assured every kilometre you complete helps. You can just lodge whatever sponsorship you have raised with us at the end of the weekend or if you still want to complete the challenge, you can do this at a different time.
