  • Mother’s Day Campaign
Mother’s Day Campaign
06 March 2016

Mothers always want to make things better. But sometimes a plaster won’t do.

Mothers always expect to deal with plenty of knocks and bumps. Children get injured and run for a plaster and a hug. And mothers make everything better…most of the time.

Half a day medicationBut for an EB mother like Liz it’s different. That’s because Liz’s daughter Claudia has EB, a savage genetic condition that makes her skin blister and break constantly. “I have never bought a box of plasters, instead I have an entire room of specialist dressings, medicines and pain relief that Claudia needs to treat the wounds that cover 90% of her body. These wound dressings have to be changed every two days and it’s torture. But unfortunately that’s only half of the EB day.”

A nightmare when sleeping…

When Claudia’s blisters start healing, they itch. If she scratches the skin, it breaks – and the problem starts all over again.Repro Free: Tuesday 30th June 2015. Picture Jason Clarke Photography.

She tries to resist scratching when she’s awake. But when she’s asleep, she can’t stop herself. By the morning, her skin is ragged and torn – and her dressings are a blood-soaked mess.

Itch Project

DEBRA Ireland is working to fund an EB itch research project in UCD.

If they find a way to offer Claudia and other EB patients relief from itching, it would be life-changing.

But none of this will happen without funding – we need €80,000 a year (for the next 3 years) to fund the project.  All donations will make a huge difference.

A kiss and a plaster usually make everything better.  But not when you have a child with EB.

You can also support DEBRA Ireland through our mobile text campaign:

(All €4 goes to DEBRA unless a provider applies VAT when a minimum of €3.25 will go to DEBRA. Service provider Like Charity 076 680 5278)
