People with EB need your help as the Coronavirus crisis pushes families to breaking point. For families already struggling to care for a child with EB, the virus and lockdown are having a devastating effect.
Why do people with EB need your help?
EB is a severe, rare, skin-blistering condition. It leaves the skin as fragile as the wings of a butterfly. Even gentle contact can cause devastating wounds. People with EB are particularly vulnerable now, as many already have compromised immune systems.
The debilitating nature of EB also means that families often experience significant financial hardship and will now need additional financial support as they find themselves suddenly out of work.
Our Outreach Nurse who responds to urgent medical calls must now stay away. And parents are sick with worry about what will happen to their precious child if they themselves become ill and must isolate.
How has the Covid-19 crisis affected DEBRA Ireland?
The impact of this crisis is going to get worse before it gets better. DEBRA is taking practical action to reduce families’ stress and hardship during this very difficult time. But we’ve had to cancel fundraising events, leaving a €300,000 hole in our budget…at a time when our families need us most.
DEBRA’s teams are assessing the medical services critical to our families. While the crisis requires a reduction in services, we’re working toward solutions. Our staff is in constant contact with our families and as per the safety guidelines our Family Support Team are now providing remote support to ensure care remains in place. We’ll help those families that are living with EB through our Family Hardship Fund. This will also extend to families who may need additional emotional support and counselling should this be required.
We urgently need to raise €30,000 by 31st May.
How your donation will change lives
Liz’s daughter Claudia has EB. She’s a brave and beautiful girl. But she is in constant pain and needs constant care. Like so many parents of children with EB, Liz has been Claudia’s main caregiver since the day she was born. She must spend hours each day helping her daughter eat, dress and bathe. And three times a week she watches as a nurse bandages her child, feeling the excruciating pain her child must endure.
But now this devoted mum has pneumonia, most likely from the coronavirus. Her husband is also sick. Their symptoms could quickly become life-threatening. But they’re more worried about their child than themselves.
“My worst nightmare has happened. I’m sick and can’t provide my child’s care and bandage changes. But thanks to DEBRA, while I lie in bed recovering and cocooning I have support. DEBRA has given me a safety net.” – Liz
We need your help to continue to provide this additional emergency care and life-changing support now and in the future, please donate what you can. Your donation will be used for the Family Emergency Fund. Any surplus will be used to fund all the critical work DEBRA Ireland does on behalf of those with EB. If you are able to, a monthly gift would help us to rebuild lost income and plan ahead as we continue to invest for a future free of EB.
Thank you for your caring heart for EB children and their struggling families. With you standing by our side, we will overcome this challenge.
